Posting Details Position Summary

The Peer Mentoring Program Specialist plays an important role in the development of a large-scale, comprehensive peer-mentoring program to support the development of all MSU Denver students.

Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Peer Mentoring, the Specialist will provide leadership and supervision to the student peer mentors, and collaborate with key participants to expand the program under Roadways.

The Program Specialist serves as a direct liaison with academic units, academic advising, faculty, and staff to market, outreach, and develop campus partners who will champion the peer-

mentoring program. The Peer Mentoring Specialist markets, recruits, trains, supervises, and provides evaluations to student staff hired in the roles of peer mentors.

The role of student staff is to develop and maintain peer-to-peer relationships with all students in their target population through traditional and non-

traditional outreach and programming initiatives. This position will contribute to the development and implementation of a peer mentoring curriculum that is focused on utilizing best practices and relevant theory for retaining students on MSU Denver’s diverse-

urban commuter campus. MSU Denver educates a diverse student body, and all programs within Roadways embed inclusive excellence within our practices and philosophies.

Duties / Responsibilities

60% TRAINING / SUPERVISION / LEADERSHIP : The Specialist will be responsible for the outreach and recruitment efforts to build a team of 75 peer mentors.

The Specialist will have a caseload of 30 40 direct supervisees and be responsible for the selection, supervision, training, evaluation, and day-

to-day performance management of these students. The Specialist is responsible for creating a positive working environment, maintaining staff and individual meetings with student staff, as necessary.

The Specialist identifies and creates professional and personal development opportunities for student staff and works closely with the Assistant Director of Peer Mentoring on training and outreach curriculum for student staff.

The Specialist will model good judgement, ethical behavior, professional relationships, and a positive and cooperative attitude.

In collaboration with the Assistant Director of Peer Mentoring, the Specialist will create tools for assessing student staff’s impact on their target population.

This position will support and participate in student success outreach activities, including campus visit program presentations, campus events, and community service projects.

15% PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT AND EVENT PROGRAMMING : In collaboration with the Assistant Director, the Specialist will play an integral role in the leadership and development of a campus-

wide and comprehensive peer-mentoring program that serves all MSU Denver students. The Specialist will participate in mission and vision planning for the peer mentoring program.

In accordance with the established goals and outcomes for the peer mentoring program, the Specialist will also develop partnerships and collaborate with students, faculty, staff, advisors, and outside vendors closely to develop a diverse platform of events that support the holistic development needs of our diverse student body.

The Specialist will collaborate with Roadways professional staff with special projects and event coordination. The Specialist will attend and participate in Roadways programs and activities.

10% ADMINISTRATIVE AND ASSESSMENT : The Specialist will support the Assistant Director of Peer Mentoring in the administration of a campus-

wide peer-mentoring program. Under the direction of the Assistant Director of Peer Mentoring, the Specialist will oversee a budget for peer-

mentor training and programming. The Specialist will oversee the development and maintenance of student staff scheduling.

The Specialist will provide necessary documentation and data to the Assistant Director of Peer Mentoring, as it pertains to assessing the success of the program and making data-

driven decisions to scale the peer-mentoring program to ensure its meeting the institutional goals of student retention and completion.

The Specialist will participate in weekly professional team meetings and one-on-one weekly meetings with the Assistant Director of Peer Mentoring.

10% PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT The Specialist will remain current with regard to trends and developments in higher education, high-

impact practices related to transition and retention, and peer mentoring programs. The Specialist will remain competent and current through self-

directed professional reading, the development of professional contacts with colleagues, attendance at professional development courses / conferences, and trainings as directed by the Supervisor.

The Specialist will represent the interests of Roadways at campus wide committees and events.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Social Work, Human Services, Human Development, Education, or related field.
  • Previous experience in supervising student staff (including co-supervision in either undergraduate or graduate-level work) that would include training and / or evaluating student performance.
  • Experience creating programs that build community engagement and foster student involvement in leadership development.
  • Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in higher education, counseling, or related field.
  • One-year experience in supervising student staff (including graduate level-work) that would include training and / or evaluating student performance.
  • Knowledge of student development theory and practice within student leadership development, peer mentoring, advising, or similar field.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working with a diverse student body (including, but not limited to : working adults, women, persons with disabilities, persons with military background, students of varying ethnic and national backgrounds, etc.
  • to increase student retention and completion.

  • Experience using effective communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills in a complex and culturally diverse work setting.
  • Knowledge of national, regional, state, and local higher education organizations, and participation in relevant local, state, and national organizations, assuming leadership roles as appropriate.
  • Knowledge of student information systems, such as Banner, Cognos, EAB, etc.
