Swasti, a Health Catalyst is a non profit organization which provides impactful, low cost, replicable health models and a range of technical support to make public health programmes successful.
We are looking for a school counsellor to pioneer the emotional wellness component of our new i4we education model within 10 schools in Bangalore.
At its core, the i4we model is a system innovation in primary healthcare, which combines health and wealth interventions, and focuses on wellness for the poor in an affordable, quality assured and scalable way.
The programme ensures the primary care of members, navigates them through a range of existing secondary and tertiary providers and uses a blended financing model.
The model combines medical, behavioural and social science with an appropriate mix of technology and health financing. It is currently delivered in four settings Urban, Rural, Factories and Sex Workers’ collectives.
Will soon be delivered within various schools to holistically address health issues faced by young children and teens.
The i4we school counsellor will provide mental health counselling support to school children, teachers and as well as to families.
They will also provide training to teachers and parents on how to deal with issues pertaining to emotional wellness.They will also be required to advocate and spread awareness of mental health issues to the broader public.
As the health models is in the initial implementation phase the appointee will initially be required to assist with an assortment of responsibilities that may well extend beyond counselling.
This will involve building relationships and partnerships with school faculty, building online information portal and helplines, primary and secondary research.
They will also be required to provide support and strengthen already existing counselling services within the respective schools.
Duties and Responsibilities
Work with school children, teachers and parents to improve mental health.
Examine issues including bullying / cyber-bullying, depression, suicide and stress, self image, anger management, LGBTQ issues, relationships within the school context.
Work with families and schools around issues pertaining to the risk of child safety
Refer children to other psychologists and services where appropriate
Strengthening already existing counselling services in 13 schools in Bangalore
Liaising with healthcare professionals as part of a health management team
Providing resources and information specific to the clients need
Organize teacher circles and positive parenting programs
Provide support in initiating online resources portal and helplines
Evaluate and improve counselling programs
Gather and analyse data to measure results
Constructing innovative mechanisms to provide mental and emotional support to the children we are not able to reach in schools
Publicly working to eradicate stigma attached to mental health issues through advocacy and spreading awareness
Qualifications and experience
Master’s degree in counselling psychology or certification in counselling
2 years or more experience in providing counseling services, experience counselling children and adolescents would be highly preferable.
Strong communication and listening skills both written and oral.
Strong command of Kannada verbal and written; English and Hindi (verbal and written) would be an asset
High level of professionalism and confidentiality
Strong organisational skills, management and team working skills
Strong working knowledge of microsoft word, excel, powerpoint. Knowledge of record keeping computer systems and programs is essential
Experience in documenting and protecting patient information
Ability to respond effectively to the needs of a diverse student pool
Sound judgement and emotional intelligence
Has non-judgemental and accepting attitude, is self aware and has strong rapport building skills
Ability to employ systems thinking to come up with effective solutions
