ABOUT STIR EDUCATION

We are an international NGO that is addressing the moral and economic imperative that every child, everywhere, should have a teacher who cultivates the joy of lifelong learning.

At a practical level, that means we support governments to reignite intrinsic motivation in teachers and local officials, through teacher networks.

Our vision is a world where teachers love teaching and children love learning. In our sixth full year of operations, we are working with 200,000 teachers and 6 million children across 70 districts in India and Uganda.

OUR MODEL

We achieve this through a five year learning partnership with an education system, where we align all levels of the education system (officials, teachers and children) around the goal of increasing intrinsic motivation.

Practically, this means that teachers undergo monthly network meetings with about 20 to 30 local peers. Through these meetings they’re supported to develop their practice in areas ranging from effective questioning to creating warm but orderly classroom routines all designed to create a more effective relationship between the teacher and child.

In doing so they develop a sense of autonomy (the sense they can change things), mastery (sense of getting better as a professionals) and purpose (reconnecting emotionally with their peers and students) the key drivers of intrinsic motivation.

District officials undergo a training and coaching programme that motivates and supports them to prioritise, run and monitor the teacher networks and a close partnership with the state or national government enables the government to align this intrinsic motivation approach within their priorities, structures and systems.

The approach is run by the government from day one and after about five years of partnering with an education system we hope to have embedded a culture of improvement at all levels for the system to continue to strengthen itself.

We typically allocate one member of our own staff per district to train, energise and coach the district officials running the approach, and a small team at the national or state level.

THE OPPORTUNITY STATE HEAD, UTTAR PRADESH

STiR is seeking to hire a State Head - UP for the State of Uttar Pradesh.

Based in Lucknow and reporting directly to the India Country Director, the State Head role is a new role within our India Senior Leadership Team.

STiR is currently undergoing a shift in strategy and, as such, requires a leader with the vision and leadership to ensure the success of our partnership with the Uttar Pradesh government.

The UP State Head role presents an opportunity for the right candidate to create a lasting impact on education in UP and in India.

  • You will be responsible for creating a genuine, open partnership with the UP government that is focused on improving learning;
  • building a highly effective team that is empowered to lead change at large scale by working through the government machinery;
  • ensuring there is a strong vision for our work in Uttar Pradesh and bringing it to life.

    The position could also be at the Associate Head level for the right candidate with demonstrated potential to grow into the role.

    ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

    To ensure a clear shared vision for STiR in UP is developed with the team and the government

  • Focus a lot of energy and time on building a clear shared purpose and sense of momentum towards the vision.
  • Make sure the vision is shared amongst a guiding coalition’ of senior government officials and political leaders.
  • Build a culture in the team that will allow us to achieve this vision through deliberate action, careful learning and focused improvement efforts.
  • Build very strong, open relationships with senior leaders from the UP Government, focused on improving intrinsic motivation

  • Ensure STiR’s work is fully aligned with government priorities.
  • Ensure that STiR’s role in helping the government in achieving its priorities is clearly understood and valued by all senior stakeholders.
  • Work to build the government commitment to increased intrinsic motivation and support them to bring this commitment to life in current Districts and in new Districts across the state over the next few years.
  • Provide very strong leadership and development support to the UP senior team and ensure that they are well set up to lead the day-

    to-day delivery of the STiR programme.

  • Act as a role model and coach to all UP senior team members.
  • Ensure each senior team member clearly sees how their role fits into the wider organisational and UP goals and work closely with them to lead focused and continuous improvement of STIR’s work across UP.
  • Support the UP senior leadership team to work closely together to ensure learning and successful implementation of STIR’s model in partnership with the government;
  • in particular, ensure that the Lucknow and Varanasi teams feel connected and part of one team’.

    Act as an Ambassador in UP for STiR with funders and other partners

  • Ensure that STiR’s learning and core messages are shared effectively to build trust.
  • Create relationships that build confidence that we are moving forward and constantly learning.
  • Contribute to learning across the wider sector and make sure STiR is well positioned to understand new ideas and up to date with changes in policy.
  • Play a role in the achieving STiR’s vision across India

  • Contribute to STIR’s India senior leadership team.
  • Build very strong relationships with counterparts in other states / countries in order to support each other and share learning.
  • Ensure that the Country Director is fully up to speed with developments in UP.
  • Play a leading role in the development of an overall culture at STiR that is in line with our organisational values.

  • Model professionalism at all times.
  • Ensure STiR’s resources are used as effectively and efficiently as possible.
  • Make sure that all relationships you build are in the STIR spirit and in line with our values.

  • REQUIRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • At least 8 years of work experience.
  • Strong identification with STiR values.
  • Demonstrated ability in building strong relationships with senior government officials and political leaders.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead a high functioning team.
  • Strategic thinker with the ability to translate ideas into action.
  • Able to be clear and objective about STiR’s stage of development in UP.
  • Ability to create a culture of high expectations and learning.
  • Excellent influencing skills.
  • Excellent planning and project management skills.
  • Ability to communicate very effectively.
  • Demonstrated ability to work through others to achieve goals.

  • REMUNERATION & BENEFITS

    A consultancy fees of ₹1,59,000 / - per month (₹19,08,000 / - per annum) will be paid for your service (subject to relevant taxes at source), along with Medical Insurance for yourself, spouse and up to two children.
