A Technical Course Developer (TCD) at VMware is an instructional designer with subject matter expertise in the solution / products they support.

The TCD must be able to effectively develop instructionally sound courseware for multiple modalities including ILT, On Demand and e-

learning content. A TCD is required to develop a thorough understanding of our XML LCMS platform and be able to use it effectively and efficiently to author single-

source projects for lecture material, lab manuals, and web courses. A TCD must be able to manage multiple deliverables independently, while also working cohesively with the larger TCS team to proliferate best practices and drive projects to completion.

The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong written and verbal communication skills, and an ability to quickly understand complex, technical concepts.

In addition, the successful candidate will have strong analytical and project management skills.


  • Use the Xyleme platform and agile methodology to development content for multiple modalities
  • Scope and design courseware based on VMware strategic priorities
  • Develop content aligned to learning objectives based on target audiences
  • Create detailed storyboards for web course and other development projects
  • Generate objective-based formative and summative assessments
  • Build relationships with cross functional teams to identify content needs and incorporate feedback
  • Adhere to project timelines and provide regular status updates through Microsoft Project / Project Web Application
  • Develop a cohesive set of scenario-based labs exercises that reinforce business outcomes
  • Create lab documentation and coordinate with labs team to modify / improve lab vApp throughout the development cycle
  • Work cohesively with other EUC-TCS team members to proliferate best practices and drive development efforts to completion
  • Follow guidelines outlined in VMware Content Creation documentation from governance

  • Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in Technical Writing, English, Technology or related field
  • 2-4 years experience authoring technical documentation for highly technical and complex software products
  • Ability to effectively work with developers, testers, project managers, support staff and other SME’s to gather needed information
  • Ability to select the right communication medium and methods for the audience and analyze the user experience to deliver optimal technical support
  • Ability to meet established deadlines and quality standards and to deliver fully on commitments
  • Strong business background and familiarity with web-based business concepts and processes
  • Proven ability to quickly understand complex, technical concepts and create concise technical documentation
  • Proven ability to work in dynamic work environments with limited supervision to deliver results
  • Ability to manage multiple issues while maintaining short response and resolution times
  • Analytical problem-solving and research abilities
  • Understanding of Agile software development lifecycles
  • A superb communicator, both written and verbal
  • Ability to work independently, use solid judgment and create client-ready deliverables
  • Excellent knowledge and experience using Microsoft Office products; experience with Storyline, Captivate, Camtasia and other technologies a plus
  • Experience creating screencast / video tutorials a plus, including script creation
  • Perform other tasks, roles and responsibilities, as required
