Designed, constructed and optimized for the virtual infrastructure, VMFS increases resource utilization by providing multiple virtual machines with shared access to a consolidated pool of clustered storage.

To lead storage multipathing and failover, VMware ESX / ESXi uses a special VMkernel layer, Pluggable Storage Architecture (PSA).

The PSA is an open modular framework that coordinates the simultaneous operation of multiple multipathing plugins (MPPs).
