Position Summary :

The Server Administrator’s role is to design, install, administer, and optimize company servers and related components to achieve high performance of the various business applications supported by tuning the servers as necessary.

This includes ensuring the availability of client / server applications, configuring all new implementations, and developing processes and procedures for ongoing management of the server environment.

Where applicable, the Server Administrator will assist in overseeing the physical security, integrity, and safety of the data center / server farm.

Major responsibilities :

  • Maintain strong service perspective and provide exceptional service to all infrastructure customers.
  • Manage work queues for incidents, problems, changes, tasks and requests and ensure workload is effectively managed.
  • Coordinate with other VIT teams to ensure availability, reliability and scalability of VMWare and Linux systems.
  • Provide senior-level support for Varian RedHat / SuSE Linux and ESXi systems globally.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware and software problems.
  • Monitor and test system performance and provide performance statistics and reports.
  • Recommend and execute modifications to VMWare and Linux systems in order to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance.

    Liase with Security Operations / Architecture organization to oversee vulnerability remediation activities for VMWare and Linux systems.

  • Review and implement new VMWare, RedHat and SuSE system releases and vendor supplied patches.
  • Comply with and advocate for the use of operational processes and procedures.

  • Check help desk database for entries on server and server resource issues; prioritize and respond to help desk tickets as appropriate.
  • Serve as cornerstone for escalating server issues; provide timely response to customer escalations.
  • Provide Web administration support by overseeing and maintaining Web server functions, such as assuring logging and metrics data are stable.
  • Monitor and test system performance and provide performance statistics and reports.
  • Create shell scripts as required.
  • Define and implement strategies for integrating disparate operating environments.
  • Recommend and execute modifications to server environment in order to improve efficiency, reliability, and performance.
  • Develop and maintain training materials and server documentation.
  • Create required reports in response to business user needs.
  • Develop, document, and maintain operational processes and tasks.
  • Manage and / or provide guidance to junior members of the team
  • Job Requirements

    Education / Experience : Educational requirements and number of years related experience acquired before or with Varian Medical Systems (VMS)

    Educational requirements : Degree in computer science or equivalent

    ITIL Certification

    Number of years related experience : Minimum 10 years related experience, minimum 5 years of experience in the Linux System Administration field

    Knowledge : Things incumbent needs TO KNOW to successfully perform on the job

    Information Technology :

    At least five years’ equivalent work experience in a senior technical analytical position responsible for managing Linux server environments.

    Advanced knowledge and hands-on experience with RedHat and SuSE Linux OS in enterprise-class infrastructure environment is required.

    Working knowledge of DNS, PHP, Apache / Tomcat and SendMail is preferred.

    Hands-on experience with VMWare vSphere hypervisor is required.

    Familiarity with TCP / IP network protocols, firewall management, and operating system configuration.

    Working technical knowledge of Shell Scripting is required.

    Hands-on troubleshooting experience

    Understanding of ITIL processes and best practise
