Position Overview :

The Literacy Program Director, Library Specialist, is part of Room to Read’s global literacy team and reports to the Literacy Senior Director.

The library specialist provides technical leadership to the children’s library component of the global literacy portfolio.

This person will oversee professional development efforts relating to establishing and sustaining high quality children’s libraries worldwide within the global literacy program team.

The library specialist will be responsible for ensuring the quality and relevance of our current library training and guidance materials.

S / he / they will also lead the development of new content to meet specified needs in line with Room to Read’s evolving effort to support reading skill development and a love of reading for children in primary school.

The library specialist is responsible for sharing information about Room to Read’s library initiatives with internal and external audiences as well as participating in strategic efforts to include Room to Read programming in the larger international education agenda.

This position also encompasses thought leadership on the design of custom projects, strategic partnerships, outreach to the larger children’s libraries community, and digital book management as it relates to Room to Read’s content platform,

The location of this position is flexible. Travel has been halted due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but when staff resume travel again, this position requires international travel.

Duties & Responsibilities :

Program Design and Implementation

  • In collaboration with the Literacy Senior Director, set the overall vision, direction, and execution of the library component of Room to Read’s global literacy portfolio
  • Lead efforts to refine existing library training and guidance materials to ensure they align with current best practices in children’s librarianship
  • Lead the development of new training and guidance content to meet specified program needs
  • Review and monitor implementation of library programs and provide hands-on support to worldwide staff for professional development of librarians, teachers, and other stakeholders
  • Collaborate with global literacy staff who specialize in literacy instruction and book publishing to ensure that the library program both serves and is served by the other components of the comprehensive literacy portfolio
  • Collaborate with Room to Read’s Global Research, Monitoring and Evaluation team to design and implement systems and procedures to assess library quality, use, and impact on children’s literacy skills and habits
  • Lead the technical design of library-focused funding proposals and custom projects
  • Advise on developing and managing book collections for primary school aged children, parent and community engagement, digital book management, and library services for young adolescents.
  • Management and Operations

  • Participate in recruiting and training new Literacy Program team staff
  • Manage Literacy Program staff and technical consultants as needed
  • Collaborate with the Literacy Senior Director and Operations team to support annual planning and budgeting, quarterly reporting, and overall tracking of program implementation
  • Assist the Marketing and Communications team in developing program-specific marketing materials, and collaborate with the Development team to support business development.
  • Thought Leadership and Representation

  • Serve as Room to Read’s expert on the latest trends and challenges in the field of children’s librarianship to support literacy development among children
  • Share internal and external research findings throughout the organization to support library program improvement
  • Represent Room to Read externally to message our children’s library work and advocate for our comprehensive literacy portfolio
  • Network with other organizations to find areas of collaboration and knowledge sharing around children’s library programs
  • Leverage and expand connections in the children’s library and international development sectors
  • Advise on effective collaboration with education ministries around the world, multi-lateral organizations, partner NGOs, and universities to continually scale, sustain, and innovate library programming within the education sector.
  • Qualifications : Required :

    Required :

  • A demonstrated passion for children’s literacy development and children’s librarianship
  • At least 10 years’ experience as an active children’s librarian at a school / public library or experience using children’s books to support literacy development in young children
  • A Master’s degree in Library Science or the equivalent in work experience
  • Experience working in diverse communities or multi-cultural / international experience
  • Strong connections in the children’s library sector
  • Proven ability to interact with external stakeholders
  • Knowledge, understanding, and experience of the challenges teachers, librarians, and students face with early literacy development in countries where Room to Read has programs
  • Experience leading and managing teams, including facilitating their professional development
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English
  • Ability to juggle multiple priorities simultaneously and take initiative
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally when it is considered safe for Room to Read staff to resume travel (Up to 25% time).
  • Preferred :

  • A minimum of 15 years of professional experience, including global management experience
  • Effectiveness in working or volunteering in a non-profit organization that is focused on maintaining high quality work and low overhead
  • Previous international experience, working effectively across cultures
  • Prior experience in a fast-paced, growth-oriented global or regional organization.
