The purpose of the Principal Expert engineering role is to operate across BT, the wider industry or specific sectors on major software engineering initiatives specifically this role focuses on engineering excellence within Wholesale and Ventures.
The role provides technical strategy and direction for a range of very high impact, risk, and value software platforms or customer solutions.
This is delivered through technical innovation, vision, and cost-effective commercial considerations. Specifically, this role is accountable for :
Creating IT assets to enable engineering excellence through development high quality engineering pipelines, continuous delivery of shippable software in a multi-
platform environment using cutting-edge technology, including cloud services.
Developing best-in-class blueprint for a polyglot and automated developer stack deployed across distributed systems, virtualized infrastructure, and highly available service and providing thought leadership, guidance and direction across a engineering discipline.
Consulting and advising senior stakeholders, internally and in a multi-vendor environment, on high profile customer solutions.
Making well thought through recommendations to Director / MD level.
Ensuring revenue generation and cost avoidance through the quality of design which underpins solutions.
Providing deep knowledge within a specific technology and the Wholesale and Ventures domain area and delivering decisions and strategy guidance based on applying this knowledge.
Must be recognised as an expert in the field outside of BT.
Possessing extensive industry knowledge and influencing industry or vendor strategy.
Pushing the technical boundaries and creating new business-wide opportunities in line with the IT transformation agenda.
Setting the strategic direction by identifying strategic software technology and process changes that deliver long-term benefits, and drive activity to implement change across BT.
Providing technical thought leadership and delivering a significant impact to the business (revenue or cost) by addressing complex business problems that are business-
wide and require a breadth of technology expertise.
Contributing to coaching and mentoring Software Engineering talent within BT to create world class capability.
Evidence of transformation and simplification in the way that Software Engineering operates for BT and its shareholders.
e.g. step change in processes, innovative designs, cost reduction / avoidance, RFT.
Significant cost reductions for BT through ownership and delivery of the solution.
Efficiency in cycle time.
Uses expertise to apply across IT Centres of excellence and Business to employee engineering
What you'll be doing
Provide leadership to how software is built / tested and deployed through the Software Development Life Cycellifecycle through best-
in-class tools / processes and frameworks for software engineers in BT.
Use your industry wide expertise and skills in a number of technological areas and domains (Java and Open Source Stack) , and actively share with others in teams projects and professions to create a culture of DevOps in BT.
Provide thought leadership to senior internal stakeholders and customers regarding new technologies that will deliver competitive advantage through engineering excellence.
Provide hands-on DevOps support within specific projects. Work within one or more project teams to drive DevOps tool adoption and set up continuous integration, delivery, testing, and deployment capabilities.
Embed quality, security, reliability engineering within Agile teams.
Embed additional DevOps practitioners in teams for a specific time-period with specific outcomes (use of a tool, help getting a practice adopted, etc.).
Work 1-on-1 and in group settings with team members and stakeholders to drive DevOps mindset and practices.
Provide training and lead teams through hands-on DevOps practices, establishing a local competency. Transition into a DevOps advisory role as team maturity grows.
Enable DevOps practices for each team, regularly assessing DevOps maturity and provide options for continuous DevOps improvement
Act as a role model and culture carrier for the organisation through engineering excellence.
Share success stories and learnings with the broader organisation. Be a thought leader challenge as needed.

Remove obstacles. Work with the Product Owner and squad members to proactively surface, escalate and address obstacles.
Encourage and facilitate cross-silo collaboration by building BT’s organisational expertise. Improve DevOps practices across the firm and help update and evolve our DevOps Operating Model, playbook and tools.
Contribute to documentation, training, best practice and knowledge sharing with presentations, white papers, blog posts etc.
Coach and mentor members of the community to become effective DevOps Enablers.

Release Engineering Management : hands-on experience of building / testing / deploying against Java / .Net and Open Source frameworks, relating to all aspects of Dev Ops tool chains / processes and platforms.
Be tech savvy : Provides comprehensive technical expertise on emerging technologies. Coordinates technology knowledge sharing with the team.
Technical experience :
Experience with Linux and Windows-based systems administration skills in a Cloud or virtualized environment.
Experience building sophisticated and highly automated infrastructure, success in automating a real-world production environment and automated build scripts used for release management across all environments.
Gradle / Ant / Maven for e.g.)
Experience with one or more of Chef, Puppet / Ansible, Terraform, AWS CLI and AWS SDK in production environments with many nodes.
Strong scripting and programming skills, i.e., Powershell, Python, Bash, Ruby, Perl, etc. Experience source code control systems (Git, SVN, Mercurial, Perforce) and CI / CD tools & frameworks (Jenkins, gitlab CodeCommit, code Build CodePipeline, bamboo)
Experience migrating & deploying application of containers and managing applications with container management platforms (ECS, Kubernates, Docker Swarm)
Testing concepts : Highly knowledgeable about a wide range of testing issues, within the context of software development practice, and able to advise and guide others.
Experience with automated testing tools (ie. Selenium, JMeter,Cucumber) and monitoring tools (Splunk and AppDynamics)
Creating maintainable code : The application of practices and tools that help to create code that is easy to understand, easy to modify, easy to test and works correctly clean code’
Give specialised advice : Provides guidance and counsel on complex and unfamiliar situations and leverages other experts to develop solution plans
Site Reliability Engineering Management : hands on experience with performance, security, scalability, testing, deployment, and capacity planning of applications on VM / Cloud Servers.
Strong Communication Skills : Ability to articulate thoughts clearly, listen to varying viewpoints and influence stakeholders.
Business acumen : Knowledgeable in business strategy and the drivers of organisational performance, including people drivers of performance and financial literacy (e.
g. business KPIs, business cases)
