The Dow Chemical Company has a job opportunity for an Overpressure Protection Technical Expert - Reactive Relief Designer.

The preferred location for this role is Chennai. Other major sites may be considered.

Dow is seeking qualified individuals for the Overpressure Protection Technical Expert - Reactive Relief Design position.

The Reactive Relief Designer supports capital project teams, operating plant personnel, improvement engineering personnel, and other technical teams in the definition and implementation of business goals and objectives.

By bringing special process safety engineering expertise for overpressure protection system design and risk assessment to these teams, the engineer contributes as a technical resource for problem solving and technology advancements.

In addition to understanding and applying legal requirements for process safety designs, the reactive relief (i.e., reactive environment relief or reactive system relief) aspect is a special application of the knowledge of reaction chemistry, chemical testing methods and interpretation, physical plant / equipment design and operating discipline.

The leadership skills required for the role are utilized to pull the knowledge together from the key functions to design processing systems that ensure safe operation of equipment while meeting competitive costs for implementation and long term cost of ownership.

The applicant will be integrated in the Process Engineering group of the TES Core Technology Center. This role supports projects across the globe.

Travel is usually marginal but is dependent on the project and technology specific needs.

Typical Goals :

  • Apply Chemical Engineering fundamental knowledge to resolve technical problems that include risk assessment and overpressure protection involving chemical reactions.
  • Become a trained & certified overpressure protection system designer.
  • Become proficient with risk assessment tools - Fault trees, dispersion modeling, Layers Of Protection Analysis (LOPA) and other hazard assessment methods.
  • Provide value adding technical solutions and / or implementation of Process Safety Level 1 Most Effective Technology (MET) to plants and project teams according to the units / team's objectives and goals.

  • Reactive chemicals data analysis and kinetic modeling (VSP, ARC)
  • RRSP, ERRSP reactive relief design sizing tools
  • DIERS Omega method and FIA shortcut reactive relief sizing tools
  • SAFSIZ, LOWSIZ, SAFNET, COMGAS, HEM, RELDES non-reactive relief design sizing tools
  • Fire duration and vessel heat-up analysis
  • Evaluation of fire protection systems
  • SIS / LOPA work process
  • FTA risk assessment tool
  • HIPS work process (Use of instrumentation to mitigate scenarios)
  • Alternative overpressure protection (Use of critical procedures to mitigate scenarios)
  • PHAST dispersion modeling (effluent handling)
  • Qualifications

    Required Qualifications :

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree is required.
  • Organization talent and ability to work simultaneously on several projects is required.
  • No visa sponsorship / support is available for this position, including for any type of permanent residency (green card) process.
  • Preferred Qualifications :

  • Either a process engineer with non-reactive relief design certification or a reaction engineer with kinetic modeling experience is preferred.
  • In the absence of reactive relief design credentialing for non-reactive relief design certified applicants, a willingness to undergo training to be certified in reactive relief design is required.

  • Familiarity with reactive chemicals test methods is desired.
  • Production or Improvement engineer experience is a plus.
