Job Description : Reporter, Social Movements

HuffPost India seeks a thoughtful and energetic reporter to cover India’s emerging social movements with nuance, empathy and insight.

The past few years have witnessed the emergence of fascinating new social formations that have upended commonly accepted truths of Indian social and political life.

Examples include the recent farmer agitations, the rise of organisations like Saharanpur’s Bhim Army, the emergence of leaders like Jignesh Mewani, and the Patel and Maratha agitations.

As our Reporter for Social Movements, we expect to you to travel frequently and report at the intersection of caste, gender, class and religion.

In the course of your travels, we expect you to listen and interpret the quiet murmurings that signal the dawn of a new politics.

Qualifications :

  • Three to five years of experience as a reporter.
  • A willingness to travel widely and frequently.
  • Competent writing skills in English.
  • Knowledge of more than one Indian language is a big bonus.
  • A nuanced understanding of caste, class and religion.
  • A willingness to read deeply about the people and movements you write about.
  • The ability to say, That’s a Story! while everyone else around you says, Oh, that is a very normal thing in our village this happens here all the time.
